Emory & Henry Strength & Conditioning Internship Program
The Emory & Henry College Strength & Conditioning Internship Program is designed to provide interested students with an academic and professional introduction to the strength & conditioning industry.
The program is divided into three internship levels, each of which build on one another.
Current Emory & Henry Strength & Conditioning Staff
Internship Curricula
Level I - Emphasis for the Level I intern will be placed on gaining experience in coaching exercise technique, working with large and small teams, testing and evaluation, and beginning program design.
Level I intern assignments and projects include:
- Study of the National Strength and Conditioning Associations Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning (selected chapters).
- Read the following texts:

- Strength and Conditioning Standards and Guidelines as published by the NSCA
- NSCA's Basics of Strength and Conditioning Manual as published by the NSCA
- Read and discuss articles on preventing sudden death, rhabdomyolysis, sickle cell trait, and asthma & spondylolitic conditions.
- Attendance at all assigned team training sessions, testing sessions, and staff meetings. Observe and/or assist the strength and conditioning staff with the training of varsity athletic teams. Assist with performance data acquisition and analysis.
- Demonstration of proficiency in basic strength and conditioning principles based on the assigned materials to advance to the next level of the internship program.
Level II - Emphasis for the Level II intern will be placed on gaining experience in coaching exercise technique in a team setting, supervised organization and administration, supervised testing and evaluation, and supervised program design.
Level II intern assignments and projects include:
- Study of the National Strength and Conditioning Associations Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning (selected chapters).
- Read the following texts:

- The Coach’s Strength Training Playbook by Joe Kenn
- The Brick Training Method by Zac Brouillette
- Read and present on 2 professional journal articles related to strength and conditioning over the course of the semester. Presentations involve audio, visual, or other means and are at least 10 minutes in length.
- Attendance at all assigned team training sessions, testing sessions, and staff meetings. Observe and/or assist the strength and conditioning staff with the training of varsity athletic teams. Assist with performance data acquisition and analysis.
- Demonstration of proficiency in advanced strength and conditioning principles based on the assigned materials to advance to the next level of the internship program.
Level III - Emphasis for the Level III intern will be placed on gaining experience in coaching exercise technique independently in team setting, independent organization and administration, testing and evaluation in a team setting, and independent program design.
Level III intern assignments and projects include:
- Read the following texts:

- Conscious Coaching by Brett Bartholomew
- Supertraining by Verkhoshansky and Siff
- Science and Practice of Strength Training by Zatsiorsky and Kraemer
- Read and present on 2 professional journal articles related to strength and conditioning over the course of the semester. Presentations involve audio, visual, or other means and are at least 10 minutes in length.
- Attendance at all assigned team training sessions, testing sessions, and staff meetings. Observe and/or assist the strength and conditioning staff with the training of varsity athletic teams. Assist with performance data acquisition and analysis.
- NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) examination preparation and attendance at local, regional, and/or national conferences will be highly emphasized.
