Joe Matthews is in his 14th year overall at Emory & Henry College and third as Director of Athletic Communications. He spent four years as Sports Information Director and seven as Director of Sports Information & Game Day Operations. He is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the athletic communications department; directing statistical and promotional coverage of the College's 24 NCAA Division II teams, two Intermont Equestrian riding programs and competitive cheer & dance teams; the oversight of the Department's live streaming efforts in conjunction with FloSports and SAC Live; and the maintenance of www.GoWasps.com.

During his first 13 years at Emory & Henry, Matthews has seen three student-athletes named Academic All-America® by CoSIDA, 66 selected as Academic All-District® and six ODAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year. He has also significantly expanded the multimedia coverage of all of E&H's sports, laying the groundwork for the department's webcasting efforts. In 2016, Matthews' football game day program was honored as "Second in the Nation" among College Division schools by CoSIDA.

Before joining the staff at E&H, Matthews served his alma mater, Lenoir-Rhyne University, as a sports information specialist from April 2010 to May 2011. He was previously Assistant Sports Information Director at then-Carson-Newman College during the 2009-10 academic year and the Graduate Assistant Sports Information Director at Lenoir-Rhyne from 2007 to 2009.

In addition to working countless Old Dominion Athletic Conference and South Atlantic Conference tournaments over the past decade and a half, Matthews has assisted with multiple NCAA Division II and Division III Tournament events. Matthews served as the official statistician for the 2023 Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl (NCAA Division III Football Championship) and the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Final Four and directed media relations for the 2022 NCAA Division III Softball Championship. All three events were held in Salem, Virginia.

In 2014, Matthews provided scoring assistance at the NCAA Division II Women's Golf Championship, held at Rock Barn Golf & Spa in Conover, North Carolina. The event was a homecoming of sorts for Matthews, who completed his undergraduate internship with the 2006 Greater Hickory Classic at Rock Barn, a tournament on the PGA's Champions Tour.

Matthews, a 2007 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in sport management, earned a Master of Business Administration from L-R in 2009. During his time as an undergraduate, Matthews served as a student assistant in the sports information office for two years and spent one year as the student manager for the Bears' women's basketball program.

Matthews is a member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Matthews has been previously involved with the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) and the Division III Sports Information Directors of America (D3SIDA).

In addition to his interests in sports, Matthews enjoys live music, zymology and is an active Freemason. A native of Lemon Springs, North Carolina, he resides in Abingdon with his calico cat, Callie.
