Emory & Henry Cross Country Teams Open 2013 Season At ODAC Preview Meet

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Emory & Henry Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams opened the 2013 season at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preview Meet Friday afternoon at The Manor Golf Club. Both squads posted a 10th-place finish on the course which will also serve as the site of the 2013 ODAC Championships in November.

The Wasps used their first outing of the year as a training session and familiarized themselves with the course where they will close out the regular season. On the men's side, freshman Alex Cooper (Christiansburg, Va.) finished 47th (29:43) in the 8K run while sophomore Will Leigh (Hamilton, Va.) turned in a time of 30:25 to finish 57th. Freshmen Kevin Watts (Stafford, Va.) and Jackson Feezell (Gastonia, N.C.) turned in solid times as well in their first collegiate race.

In the women's race, all seven runners turned in times under 30:00 for their 6K race, a feat never before accomplished by an E&H squad. Sophomore Leslie Sierra (Front Royal, Va.) led the way with a 27:37 while sophomore Elizabeth Wilson (Roanoke, Va.) and freshman Audra VanDerwerker (Bedford, Va.) rounded out the top three with times of 28:05 and 28:45, respectively.

Second-year Head Coach Tom Antenucci is pleased with the results though at first glance they may seem disappointing. Antenucci's squads are known for using early season competition as tempo training days and especially to get to know a course if it will appear later on in the season's calendar.

The Wasps will next take their marks on Friday, September 6 when they travel to Unicoi, Tenn., for Millgan College's Buffalo Valley Stampede at Buffalo Valley Golf Course. The meet is set to start at 6:00 p.m.
