Lynchburg Women’s Basketball Gets Past Emory & Henry, 72-62, Saturday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Lynchburg College Women's Basketball Team (14-8, 9-5 ODAC) shot 47.2 percent from the field en route to defeating Emory & Henry College (7-15, 4-10 ODAC) by a 72-62 score Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center. The contest was also the Wasps annual Play 4Kay game and $200.00 was raised for the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.

Lynchburg got out to a 10-3 lead at the 17:07 mark of the first half. E&H went on a 7-3 run with a pair of three-point baskets from sophomore guard Michelle Williams (Stokesdale, N.C.) to close the gap to 13-10. The Hornets then scored 11 of the next 12 points, for a 24-11 advantage with 7:19 on the clock. The Wasps went on a 10-0 run with five points coming from junior forward JoBeth Wright (Mooresville, N.C.) to cut the deficit to 24-21. The margin would also be at three at the half, 30-27.

Coming out of the break, the two squads traded baskets with Emory & Henry getting its first lead of the contest at the 15:00 mark on a layup by Wright. With 12:47 on the clock, the Hornets took the lead for the final time (46-44) and pushed their advantage to a game high of 69-55 with just over three minutes remaining. E&H didn't back down and trimmed the gap to eight down the stretch, but LC went on to win 72-62.

Lynchburg placed five different players in double figures in scoring led by Lauren Penley and Shannon Allan with 13 points apiece.  Allan nearly completed the double-double with nine rebounds and added four assists, two blocks and two steals. Katie Reeves had 11 points and five assists while Sarah Tolliver and Chaney Forbush posted 10 points apiece from the bench. Forbush had a game-high 11 boards for the double-double.

The Hornets shot 47.2 percent (23-for-53) for the game including a 15-for-25 (60%) clip in the second half. They also held a 40-36 rebounding advantage and won the battle between the blocks with 38 points in the paint.

E&H was paced by freshman forward Karina Farr (Graham, Wash.) with 11 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Kristie Langley (Staley, N.C.) had 11 points and six rebounds while Wright finished the game with 10 points and four steals. Williams and sophomore guard Jalan McPherson (Jonesville, Va.) each tallied eight points in the contest.

As a team, the Wasps shot just 21-for-59 (35.6%) from the floor but made 73.7 percent (14-of-19) free throws in the contest. E&H has 13 assists and six steals, and registered 16 points off turnovers.

Emory & Henry will travel to Guilford College on Wednesday evening for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with the Quakers. The contest will be a doubleheader with the men's team who will take on Guilford at 7:30 p.m.
