Second-Seeded Randolph-Macon Defeats #7 Emory & Henry, 3-0, In ODAC Volleyball Tournament Quarterfinals

ASHLAND, Va. – The #2 Randolph-Macon College Volleyball Team (21-5) advanced to the semifinals of the 2011 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament Wednesday evening with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-20, 25-11) victory over second-seeded Emory & Henry College. The Wasps conclude the 2011 season with a 14-13 record, a four-match improvement over a year ago.

Emory & Henry senior Sam Lucado (Salem, Va.) tallied 17 digs on the night to secure her place in the record books reaching 1,000 dig plateau. For her career, Lucado finishes with 1,007 digs including 374 during her senior season.

The Yellow Jackets and Wasps battled back and forth early in the first set to a 6-6 tie. R-MC scored six straight points to take a 12-6 lead and was able to hang on to win the first frame. Mallory Carter recorded six kills in the set for Randolph-Macon.

E&H got out to a 4-1 lead in the second frame but R-MC battled through the set thanks to four- and seven-point scoring runs to get the advantage and the win.

The third stanza was all Yellow Jackets. The set featured an eight-point service run by Carter which included three aces.

Randolph-Macon was led by Carter with 15 kills and a .316 (15-3-38) hitting percentage. Tori Puryear and Mallory James had seven and six kills, respectively, in the contest. Bailey Troia dished-out 33 assists while Marli Dabareiner notched 25 digs in the contest.

Junior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) paced the Wasps offense with 12 kills while sophomore setter Fallon Davis (Mooresville, N.C.) registered 17 assists.

E&H will await the announcement of the 2011 All-ODAC teams, which will be released on Saturday in conjunction with the tournament final.
