Emory & Henry Women’s Track & Field Sees Three Records Fall At JDL Early Bird Invitational Sunday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Indoor Track & Field Teams got the 2023-24 season started on Sunday at the JDL Early Bird Invitational, hosted by JDL Fast Track on Sunday. The two squads combined to break seven school records with four records falling on the men's side while three marks were eclipsed by the women.

Top Men's Performances
- Freshman Jackson Swanson (Salem, Va.) broke the school record in the 60 meters at 7.09 seconds, finishing sixth in the qualifying round and second in his heat. In the 200 meters, freshman Joshua Black (Woodbridge, Va.) was 15th in :23.39.
- Freshman Kaleb Elswick (Big Rock, Va.) shattered the E&H mark in the 3,000 meters by nearly 16 seconds, going a 9:08.37 to finish 13th and was 17th in the mile.
- Freshman Drew Craft (Covington, Va.) set a new record in the triple jump of 13.06 meters to finish 14th. He also posted a new school-best mark in the long jump at 6.30 meters which was good for 17th.
- Freshman Heath Bowker (Salem, Va.) was the runner-up in the 600 meters at 1:23.06. Sophomore Samuel Tindall (Fort Defiance, Va.), and freshmen Hillis Roberson, IV (Rosenburg, Texas) and Gavin Kegler (Woodbridge, Va.) were ninth, 10th and 16th, respectively.
- The Wasps put seven runners in the top 16 of the 1,000 meters. Freshman Caedan Bowker (Salem, Va.) led the way at sixth place with a time of 2:40.43. Sophomore Miles Baldwin (Willis, Va.) (eighth), junior Aaron Wilson (Chester, Va.) (11th), sophomore Logan Choplin (Manassas, Va.) (12th), and freshmen Gage Coleman (Bristol, Va.) (13th) and Ethan Dalton (Hillsville, Va.) (16th) also competed.
- Junior Matthew Klapak (Zion Crossroads, Va.) was 14th in the mile at 4:39.03 and 17th in the 3,000 meters while freshman Davis Norman (Salem, Va.) was 21st.
- Sophomore Tyrique Taylor (Christiansburg, Va.) was sixth in the shot put at 14.74 meters while junior Zadok Laryea (Ruther Glen, Va.) was 18th in the triple jump.
- In the 4x800 meter relay, the Wasps finished second overall at 8:09.83 on the efforts of Kegler, Roberson, Heath Bowker and Tindall.

Women's Top Performances
- Sophomore Delaney Eller (Salem, Va.) won the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:08.42 while freshman Kennedy Harris (Mineral, Va.) was fourth and sophomore Claire Marion (Dobson, N.C.) was seventh.
- Freshman Jessi Looney (Vansant, Va.) crushed the school record in the 3,000 meters by 10 seconds, going an 11:27.63 to finish 13th. Sophomore Elise McKinney (Church Hill, Tenn.) was 17th while freshmen Maddy Fiscus (Rural Retreat, Va.), Madison Carlisle (Stafford, Va.) and freshman Hannah Rosen (Falls Church, Va.) were 21st, 22nd, and 24th, respectively.
- Freshman McKenzie Tate (Wytheville, Va.) was seventh in the 600 meters (1:47.47) with freshman Sonya Wagner (Afton, Tenn.) taking 13th.
- Sophomore Scarlett Eversley (Dumfries, Va.) set a new program best with her 15th-place finish in the triple jump at 10.12 meters, besting the previous mark by nearly three-quarters of a meter.
- Sophomore Taylorann Cash (Buena Vista, Va.) was 22nd in the shot put (9.91m) as sophomore Catie Leonard (Gray, Tenn.) took 24th in the weight throw (10.53m).
- The 4x400-meter relay went more than five seconds faster than the previous mark as freshman Adrianna Hall (Salem, Va.), Eller, Harris and Tate crossed the line in 4:24.86.

- Emory & Henry returns to action on Friday and Saturday when it competes at the Bast-Cregger Invitational, hosted by Roanoke College.
